Sounds of Africa (SOA) is out with “Tom & Jerry,” delivering an energetic Afro House record inspired by one of pop culture’s most recognizable duos.
Taking its title from the famously playful and constantly battling cartoon characters, “Tom & Jerry” uses their unpredictable relationship as a playful metaphor for modern love. The song explores the familiar reality of couples who can disagree, misunderstand each other, and remain deeply connected.
Rather than treating those moments of tension as something purely negative, SOA turns them into a source of energy. “Tom & Jerry” captures the push and pull of relationships through a danceable record built for both personal listening and the dance floor.
The production sits firmly within Afro House while incorporating Afro-fusion elements that reflect Sounds of Africa’s wider musical identity. Deep basslines, atmospheric synths, rhythmic percussion, and memorable vocal melodies give the record its modern electronic foundation, while live instrumentation brings an organic layer to the sound.
Produced by Penz Melaidis and executive produced by Chinedu Victor Nweke, the track features performances from Penz Melaidis, Solution Wonder, and Obi Conga. Solution Wonder opens the record with the first verse, before Penz Melaidis takes the second verse, while Obi Conga adds live conga drums throughout the song.
Live instrumentation is central to the character of “Tom & Jerry.” Piano, conga, clave, and shakers were recorded live, allowing the track to retain the warmth and movement of human performance within its contemporary Afro House framework.
Obi Conga’s percussion work is particularly prominent, locking into the track’s rhythmic foundation and complementing the deep low-end and electronic textures. The result is a record that feels simultaneously polished and organic, bringing together modern club production and the unmistakable energy of African instrumentation.
At its heart, “Tom & Jerry” is a celebration of the complicated but often entertaining nature of love. Like its cartoon namesakes, relationships can be filled with clashes, misunderstandings, laughter, and moments of undeniable connection. The release also reflects the broader ambitions of Sounds of Africa, an independent Nigerian record label focused on discovering, developing, and promoting African talent. Founded by executive producer Chinedu Victor Nweke, also known as Educe, alongside producer and artist Aniefiok Johnson Okon, known professionally as Penz Melaidis, the label was established to create opportunities for independent artists and give their music a platform beyond their immediate surroundings.
With “Tom & Jerry,” SOA continues that mission through a record that connects contemporary Afro House production with live African musicianship and a story that listeners across cultures can instantly understand.
