Tems and Tyla Lead African Streaming Boom in Q1 2026

African music’s global dominance continues to reach new heights, with Tems and Tyla emerging as the most-streamed Afrobeats artists in the first quarter of 2026.

According to newly released streaming data, 20 African artists collectively generated over 8 billion streams across platforms in Q1 alone — a figure that further cements the continent’s influence on the global music landscape. At the center of this surge is Tems, who crossed an extraordinary milestone of over 1 billion streams in a single quarter, finishing with 1,023,601,460 streams.

The achievement places Tems in an elite global category, not only leading African artists by a wide margin but also positioning her among the most streamed artists worldwide. Her total puts her nearly 270 million streams ahead of the next closest act, underlining her current dominance.

Close behind, Tyla continues her rapid rise with an impressive 755 million streams. The South African star has become one of the most exciting crossover acts in recent years, successfully blending African sounds with global pop appeal and expanding her reach across multiple markets.

The top five is rounded out by a trio of heavyweights: Wizkid with 696 million streams, Asake at 643 million, and Burna Boy close behind with 641 million. Their continued consistency highlights the strength and staying power of African music’s leading figures.

Beyond the top tier, a new generation of stars is steadily shaping the future. Ayra Starr (484M), Rema (454M), and Seyi Vibez (391M) are carving out distinct paths, with Rema in particular maintaining strong global momentum following years of crossover success.

Geographically, Nigeria continues to dominate the streaming landscape, accounting for 14 of the top 20 artists and approximately 72% of total streams. South Africa also maintains a notable presence through Tyla, Seether, and WizTheMc. Meanwhile, the Arab world is represented by Amr Diab (415M) and Sherine (270M), reflecting the region’s significant streaming audience.

Ghana’s presence comes through Black Sherif, who recorded 186 million streams, continuing to represent the country on the global stage. Another standout name is Fola, who amassed 329 million streams and is widely tipped as one to watch in the coming months.

With numbers of this scale, the narrative around African music has clearly shifted. Once labeled as “emerging,” the genre is now firmly established as a dominant force in global music culture, with artists like Tems and Tyla leading a movement that shows no signs of slowing down.
