Five-time GRAMMY-winning global icon Angélique Kidjo returns with a sweeping orchestral rendition of “Bando,” featuring Pharrell Williams and Quavo. The new version expands the standout track from her 19th Studio album HOPE!! into a grand celebration of resilience, community and hope.
Produced by Pharrell Williams, the orchestral version brings together the gospel power of Voices of Fire and the expansive sound of L’Orchestre du Pont Neuf, led by composer and conductor Thomas Roussel. The richer arrangement gives new weight to the song’s central message of survival, transforming it into a stirring collective anthem that feels both cinematic and deeply human.
“Bando” draws its title from a term used for an abandoned house, but Kidjo uses the concept to look beyond physical spaces and towards the people, creativity and determination that exist within communities affected by poverty and inequality. Rather than focusing solely on hardship, the song celebrates the pride, joy and artistic energy that can emerge from those environments.
That message is brought vividly to life in the accompanying video, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul Hunter. Kidjo, Pharrell Williams and Quavo filmed the visual in La Grande Borne, a public-housing community in Grigny, outside Paris. Residents gathered in the streets despite an intense heat wave, creating a lively atmosphere that reflects the community spirit at the heart of the song.
For Kidjo, the decision to film within the community was important because “Bando” is ultimately about challenging the narrow narratives often attached to life in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The video instead captures connection, celebration, and the determination of people who continue to create and dream despite difficult circumstances.
The release also continues the long-running creative relationship between Kidjo and Pharrell, which began nearly two decades ago. Their collaboration has grown into one of the key creative partnerships behind HOPE!!, with Pharrell writing and producing three songs for the album.
The new orchestral arrangement first appeared as the finale of Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2027 Men’s Show in Paris, where Pharrell serves as Men’s Creative Director, before now receiving its full release alongside the official video.
HOPE!!, Kidjo’s first full-length album following her GRAMMY-winning Mother Nature, is a deeply personal project dedicated to her late mother, Yvonne. Across the record, she explores grief, love, resilience and the sustaining power of hope through collaborations with artists including Pharrell Williams, Quavo, Ayra Starr, Davido, Nile Rodgers, Charlie Wilson, IZA and PJ Morton.
“Bando [Orchestral]” arrives during a landmark period in Kidjo’s career. On August 18, she became the first African musician and first Black African to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with the occasion also being officially recognized as Angélique Kidjo Day in Hollywood. She subsequently returned to New York to headline SummerStage in Central Park.
The celebrated singer will continue her remarkable year with two performances at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in Johannesburg on September 25 and 26, bringing her four decades of boundary-crossing artistry to South Africa.
With its combination of orchestral grandeur, gospel energy, hip-hop presence and Kidjo’s unmistakable voice, “Bando [Orchestral]” turns an already powerful song into an even larger statement about community, dignity and the ability to create light in difficult places.
