Three decades after his passing, legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti has made history as the first African artist to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The posthumous honor was presented during the 2026 Special Merit Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, January 31, on the eve of the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.
Fela’s children — Yeni Kuti, Kunle Kuti, Shalewa Kuti, and Femi Kuti — accepted the award on his behalf. Yeni remarked in her acceptance speech, “I want to thank the Grammys for this wonderful award. I’m sure my father is smiling down on us… I want to acknowledge my siblings who couldn’t be here tonight, Motunrayo and Seun, and my nephew who is carrying Afrobeat to another level, Made.”
Femi Kuti added, “I would like to thank all the people carrying Afrobeat that are in this place tonight — DJs, the press, our label Partisan, our lawyers, fans all over the world. Thank you for bringing our father here. It’s so important for Africa. It’s so important for world peace and struggle.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the Recording Academy’s National Trustees, recognizes artists who have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording. Fela was honored alongside international icons including Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, and Paul Simon.
Fela Kuti’s impact on music and culture is immeasurable. As the “father of Afrobeat,” he fused Nigerian and Ghanaian rhythms with funk, jazz, and soul, pioneering a genre that continues to influence artists worldwide. His 1976 album Zombie was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025, further cementing his posthumous legacy. His music has been sampled and celebrated by global stars such as Beyoncé, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Kelly Rowland, while inspiring literature, fashion, and social consciousness movements.
Reflecting on his father’s influence, Femi Kuti told OkayAfrica, “The older I get, I see that [Fela] wasn’t the conventional father, he was everybody’s father… The deeper I looked into his eyes, I did see love.”
This historic Lifetime Achievement Award underscores Fela Kuti’s enduring influence as a musical innovator, cultural ambassador, and political voice, closing out a monumental year for his legacy.
