Some songs age well. Others grow into something bigger than anyone planned. “Favourite Person,” the new single from Cameron Emmanuel featuring Lequicia Astrid, belongs firmly in the second category.
When Cameron Emmanuel first wrote Favourite Person, it wasn’t meant to soundtrack a proposal, a partnership, or a forever kind of love. It was one of several songs born from a different chapter of his life. But as fate would have it, the song waited patiently for the moment it truly belonged to. Favourite Person stands as a living love story — one that began in the studio and eventually led to Cameron getting down on one knee.
Blending warmth, vulnerability, and Afropop sensibility, Favourite Person is a duet shaped by shared pain and unexpected connection. Cameron Emmanuel, who grew up surrounded by music from the Bee Gees, the Beatles, and Simon & Garfunkel, has been writing his own story since picking up a guitar at just eight years old. By sixteen, he was teaching himself keys, drawing inspiration from Idols SA and artists like Khaya Mthethwa, who would later become both mentor and collaborator.
Enter Lequicia Astrid — a powerhouse vocalist and former winner of Chatsworth’s Got Talent. When she reconnected with Cameron Emmanuel for studio sessions at Wave Productions, she was navigating deep personal grief following the passing of her mother. Given a selection of songs to choose from, Lequicia was instinctively drawn to Favourite Person, unaware of its original backstory.
That irony became part of the magic. “It was written with someone else in mind,” Lequicia reflects. “But when we sang it together, it became ours.”
The song’s foundation was created live on TikTok by Durban-based DJ Keys (David Govender), who began crafting the beat in real time during a TikTok Live session. Days later, Cameron and Lequicia were in the studio, refining lyrics, shaping harmonies, and unknowingly laying the groundwork for something far deeper than a collaboration. Music turned into connection. Connection turned into love. Months later, Cameron proposed — and Lequicia said yes.
Already making waves on social media, Favourite Person has been praised for its heartfelt vocals, natural chemistry, and relatable message — especially for listeners who’ve found love in unexpected places. It’s an Afropop duet rooted in honesty, proof that sometimes the right song simply waits for the right moment.
