Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, returns with his seventh studio album, Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head). Released yesterday, this powerful collection continues Seun’s unwavering dedication to Afrobeat’s deep grooves and searing political messages, adding a modern vibrance with an updated Egypt 80 lineup. The album also showcases dynamic collaborations, including “Dey” featuring reggae icon Damian Marley, and “Love & Revolution” with Zambian rapper Sampa the Great, weaving additional layers into Seun’s Afrobeat style while staying true to its roots.

Crafted over six years, Heavier Yet marks Seun’s fifth album with Egypt 80, embodying both heritage and evolution. Executive producer Lenny Kravitz brings fresh Stateside flair to the project, while Sodi Marciszewer, who once worked with Fela himself, preserves the foundational Afrobeat authenticity.

The album’s opening track, “TOP,” glides with a soulful guitar riff, tackling themes of materialism. This is followed by “Dey,” a reggae-infused call for unity, featuring Marley’s verses. Tracks like “Emi Aluta,” with its powerful horns and infectious call-and-response vocals, dive deep into revolutionary spirit, embodying Seun’s potent message of solidarity.

Heavier Yet reflects Seun’s commitment to Afrobeat’s legacy and evolution, honoring Fela’s influence while pushing the genre forward.
