South African dance music duo Major League DJz are ushering in a new era of sound as they expand beyond their signature Amapiano style. In a conversation with Tim Sweeney on Apple Music, the twin brothers Banele and Bandile Mbere shared insights into their musical evolution, global ambitions, and an unreleased version of their hit track “Come With Me” featuring British singer Jorja Smith.

Known for championing Amapiano — a slowed-down, log-drum-heavy subgenre of House music that emerged from South Africa — the duo revealed they are now exploring new territory, blending Afro House and Amapiano influences into what they call “Beyond Piano.”

“We have this thing called Beyond Piano,” said Banele. “It’s still House like Amapiano is, but now we’re taking the tempo up while still using the log drum. A lot of people call it a mixture of Afro House and Amapiano.” When asked to label the emerging sound, the brothers resisted boxing it in. “It’s more of a movement of some sort,” Banele added. “I don’t want people to think we’ve left Amapiano behind, really.”

“It’s just evolving,” Bandile emphasized. The conversation also touched on their expansion into global dance music markets and unreleased material, including an early version of “Come With Me” with Jorja Smith — hinting at the duo’s growing international reach and artistic ambition.

As they continue pushing boundaries, Major League DJz remain rooted in their South African identity while aiming to influence dancefloors worldwide with their evolving sound.
